Official Press Conference at SportAccord International Convention
平成25（2013）年5月30日（木曜）夕方、サンクトペテルブルク市のレンエキスポ展示会場で、2020年オリンピック・パラリンピック競技大会の東京招致に向けたプレゼンテーションを終えた猪瀬知事は、6人のプレゼンテーター、福井文部科学副大臣とともに、公式記者会見に臨みました。
会見では、東京のホスピタリティとして、毎年行っている東京マラソンを例に挙げて、スタートの都庁からゴールの国際展示場まで、ランナーから預かった3万6千人分のウェアが着実に届くこと、そしてコースにAEDを70箇所設置して、倒れたランナーの命を救急車が来る前に観衆とまわりのランナーとで助け、これまで一人の死者も出していないことを紹介しました。
会場を離れる際に、囲んだ記者団に対して「3月、IOCの評価委員会に、我々はやる気、情熱があることをお見せしました。今回も、単なるテクノロジーだけの問題ではなく、パッション、ホスピタリティがあって、東京は確実にオリンピックを運営する能力があることを、みんなで表現しに来ました。日本人は物静かで、遠慮深いですが、今回はスポーツに対する情熱を会場と共有できて、本当にオリンピックをやりたい強い思いが伝わったと思います」と手応えを語りました。
また、招致までマラソンに例えると、どの辺りかという記者の質問に対して、「30キロを越えて勝負をかけるところかな。その先は、日頃の鍛錬や思いの強さが勝負を決めると思います。もちろん時の運もあるでしょうが、これからは、全身全霊で打ち込むことが求められるでしょう」と決意を述べました。
In the evening of Thursday, May 30, Governor Inose, who had just finished his presentation promoting Tokyo’s bid for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, held an official press conference along with other members of Tokyo’s delegation at the Lenexpo Exhibition Complex in St. Petersburg, Russia.
At the press conference, the governor pointed to the annual Tokyo Marathon as an example of how Tokyo focuses on the needs of athletes when hosting sporting events. Specifically, the governor mentioned the way in which the personal belongings of the 36,000 runners are transported from the start line in Shinjuku to the finish line at Odaiba and reliably returned to each owner. In addition, he explained that AED (automated external defibrillator) units are placed at 70 locations along the marathon course to be used in the unfortunate event that a runner collapses during the race.
Following the press conference, the governor responded to media questions saying, “In March, we showed the IOC Evaluation Commission that we have the determination and passion. This time as well, it is not just about what Japan can offer in the area of technology. We came here to show the world together that Tokyo has the passion, the spirit of hospitality, and the reliable know-how to deliver the Games. Generally speaking, the Japanese people are fairly quiet and reserved. However, we were able to share in the passion for sport with everyone here at the conference, and I think that we were able to convey our strong desire to host the Olympic Games.”
When asked by a reporter to compare the bid race to a marathon and approximate where Tokyo currently stands, the governor said, “I think we are just past the 30 km mark and at the point where we need to make our move in the race. From here on, I think the outcome of this race will be decided by such factors as our solid discipline and strong passion. Of course, there is also the matter of whether or not fortune is on our side. However, in order to win, I expect that from now on it will be necessary for us to devote our hearts and souls completely to the race.”
