On Tuesday, May 19, Premier Mike Baird of New South Wales, Australia, paid a courtesy call on Governor Masuzoe.

The governor welcomed the premier saying, “Tokyo and New South Wales have enjoyed a sister state relationship since 1984. Through this meeting, I would like to advance our relations to be even more productive. With the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games to serve as a springboard, we aim to make Tokyo the world’s best city. I hope that Tokyo will learn from Sydney’s experience and that we continue to work together.”

Following the meeting, the governor and premier signed a memorandum of understanding that calls for close exchange and collaboration between the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and the New South Wales Government in the areas of: the Olympic and Paralympic Games and sports; education; and the creation of sustainable cities. At a joint press conference announcing the signing of the MOU, Governor Masuzoe said, “I believe this agreement will enable us to enter a new stage of win-win relations. I hope we will continue to lead the development of the Asia-Oceania region together, while inspiring and uplifting each other as good partners and competitors.”
