On Friday, November 13, Governor Masuzoe attended a ceremony marking the signing of an MOU between the United States Olympic Committee (USOC), Setagaya Ward, and the Japan Olympic Committee (JOC) for Setagaya Ward to host the USOC’s training camp before and during the Tokyo 2020 Games. In addition to the governor, Nobuto Hosaka, Mayor of Setagaya Ward, Alan Ashley, Chief of Sport Performance for the USOC, and U.S. Ambassador to Japan Caroline Kennedy were also in attendance.

The governor introduced initiatives that Tokyo is proactively implementing in preparation for the Tokyo 2020 Games, including the elimination of traffic congestion, upgrading Wi-Fi accessibility, and the cultivation of volunteers, so that the city will be ready to welcome the world. He went on to say, “These initiatives are not only for the Tokyo 2020 Games. I look forward to these measures becoming legacies that will last well beyond the Games. I hope that the U.S. Olympic Team will make full use of the training facilities in Setagaya Ward and achieve great success!”

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government is working with its municipalities, the JOC, and the Japan Paralympic Committee (JPC) to attract pre-Games training camps to Tokyo. This signing of an MOU between a municipality and a National Olympic Committee (NOC) or other organization to host a pre-Games training camp was a first in Tokyo.
