Tokyo Metropolitan Government to Kick Off Recruitment of
City Volunteers on September 26th

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) is proud to announce that it will start recruiting City Volunteers to welcome guests and act as the face of the host city for the Tokyo 2020 Games.

Overview of the Volunteer Program

1 Application Period

Wednesday, September 26, 2018 starting at 13:00 to Wednesday, December 5, 2018 closing at noon
* Applications are not registered on a first-come-first-served basis.

2 Number of City Volunteers: 30,000 individuals

  1. Number of recruits:
    Approximately 20,000 individuals
  2. City Volunteers will also include approximate 10,000 individuals as follows:
    Tokyo Tourism Volunteers and volunteers in Tokyo for the Rugby World Cup 2019TM, Japan who wish to also volunteer for the Tokyo 2020 Games, applicants from Tokyo-based universities, and those who receive recommendations from a Tokyo municipality (approximately 5,000 individuals).

3 Eligibility

Applicants must fulfill the following three requirements:

  1. Born on or before April 1, 2002
  2. Japanese nationals or persons with permission to reside in Japan
  3. Able to converse in basic Japanese (communication level)

4 How to Apply

(1) Online application (English available)

Please fill out the form on the “Tokyo Metropolitan Volunteerism Navigation Website”, scheduled to open for applications on September 26 at 13:00

(2) Apply by fax (Japanese language only)

Fill out an application form and send a stamped envelope to the office below (must be postmarked by application deadline):

* Fax and mail application forms will be available from September 26, 2018 at the Information Centers located on the 1st and 2nd floor of the TMG Main Building No.1 and No. 2. or can be downloaded from the “Tokyo Metropolitan Volunteerism Navigation Website”. In addition, individuals who wish to receive an application form by mail can inquire directly at the Tokyo 2020 Games City Volunteer Recruitment Office (see section 6). Fax and mail application forms are only available in Japanese.

5 Upcoming Schedule

January 2019 Interview and information session notifications sent out to candidates
February – May 2019 Interviews and information sessions, etc.
September 2019 (approximate date) Candidates selected for standardized training notified
October 2019 – February 2020 (approximate dates) Standardized training
March 2020 (approximate date) Candidates who have successfully completed standardized training are formally notified of their selection
April 2020 – Role-specific training and leadership training
June 2020 – Location-specific training
June 2020 – Uniforms distributed to volunteers, etc.

7 Other Information

  2. The local governments hosting competition venues outside Tokyo will be recruiting and managing their own City Volunteers.
