(5)Comment by the “Good Design Award” judges

This project linked what are probably the most widely known landmarks in Japan—the Imperial Palace and Tokyo station—through a symbolic square of a size that is remarkable in the country. It significantly changed the impression of the Tokyo station front area. It created a new flow of people and meetings, such as providing view of a Tokyo station and a place to take pictures with the symbolic station in the background. This is a project on a city scale, yet detailed design went into the lighting fixtures and pavement, producing a high-quality urban space that greatly enhanced the potential of the area. It features a praise-worthy design that could change the impression of Tokyo.

(6)About the Good Design Award

Good Design Award succeeded the “Good Design Product Selection System,” which was established by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (the present Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry) in 1957. In 1998, that system was privatized under the Japan Industrial Design Promotion Organization (the current Japan Institute of Design Promotion) and reborn as the Good Design Award. It is the only comprehensive evaluation and commendation system for industrial design in Japan.
