“Information on Opening for the New Year”, Tokyo Metropolitan Gardens

8 Tokyo Metropolitan Gardens will open from January 2, 2019. We are having variety of events that suit New Year. Please visit the Tokyo Metropolitan Gardens with your family and friends and enjoy the New Year.

1. “Festive New Year Celebrations at Hamarikyu Gardens”, Hamarikyu Gardens

(1) A hawk flying high in the New Year’s sky! Hawking demonstration

• Date and time
  Wednesday, January 2 and Thursday, January 3
  11 am and 2 pm (for about 60 minutes) *Canceled in case of rain

• Description
  Traditional hawking performance is held in this place, which used to be the Otakaba (hawking ground) of the shogun’s family in the old days.
  *Before and after the hawking performance, aikido demonstration is also performed.

(3) Memorial photo shooting at Tsubame-no-Ochaya!

• Description
  The building features 24 pieces of kugikakushi* in a sparrow design. The upper side of the stepped floor of the tea house is open for memorial photo shooting.
  *Kugikakushi is a metal decorative object which conceals the head of nails stuck on a horizontal piece of timber used in Japanese-style rooms.
• Notes
  • No photo-shooting staff is in service. Please do not use camera stands such as a tripod and a monopod inside the building.
  • Visitors are requested to take off their shoes and wear socks when entering the tea house.
  • Because of the small area, the access is limited to visitors who wish to take a memorial shot. Visitors are requested to refrain from entering the tea house only for seeing. Visitors may be requested to make a queue for photo shooting depending on their number.

2. “Celebrate the New Year in the gardens”, Kyu-Shiba-rikyu Gardens

  Koraku-an, the Japanese traditional art performance group led by Tazae Mochizuki the second, gives lively Sanbaso performance in celebration of the New Year.

  Sanbaso is a traditional art performance, which is said to be older than Noh and Kabuki plays, to pray for a bountiful harvest through dynamic dances with choreography consisting of “stamping the feet on the earth and seeding movements”.

5. “Spectacles of Kyu-Iwasaki-tei Gardens - The New Year holiday spent in residences colored with Japanese and western flowers”, Kyu-Iwasaki-tei Gardens

(1) Collaboration of the New Year flowers and kinkarakami

  Inside the residences are beautifully decorated with the New Year flower arrangements and kinkarakami works.

  * “Kinkarakami” is the reproduction of kinkarakawashi, Japanese unique leather paper, which derives from the leather paper for interior decoration of walls in Europe with “washi” (Japanese paper) using the same technique. Mr. Takashi Ueda successfully revived this handicraft as a modern work by trial and error. “Kinkarakami” is made by layering multiple sheets of gold-gilded washi (Japanese paper) on a wooden printing roller with the patterns engraved and beating the paper using a brush for embossing and coloring. It is classy, top grade wall paper characterized by the colored-leather-like appearance.

(2) DIY Cedar Rose New Year Ornament Class

*The gardens are designated as important cultural assets, and no heating equipment is provided in the western-style residence. It is strongly recommended visitors wrap themselves up well. In addition, for safety reasons, visitors are strictly requested not to wear slippers or room shoes inside the residences. We recommend visitors to bring thick socks and the like for cold protection.

8. “Celebrate the New Year in Tonogayato Gardens”, Tonogayato Garden

(1) Introduction of special feature for the Gardens of the New Year.

  Panels explaining snow protective lifting, rush mat wrapping, frost protection, and old trees are displayed.

(2) Tonogayato Gardens Karuta (Japanese card game) Competition

• Description
  A karuta competition is held, where karuta cards in original Tonogayato Gardens are used. Enjoy the attractiveness of the Gardens through playing karuta.

Closing during year-end holidays

The above 8 Gardens are closed from December 29 to January 1. Please be informed of the holiday policy. Also, Mukojima-Hyakkaen Gardens is closed from December 29 to January 3.
However, Fukurokuju Shrine is open to those who visit shichifukujin (the Seven Deities of Good Fortune) of the Sumida River for free of charge from January 1 to 3.

Tokyo Metropolitan Gardens offer convenient annual passports that can be used to enjoy the gardens without limit for a year at a good price at the guest reception of individual garden offices throughout the year. We encourage visitors to enjoy the deal.
