Tokyo Anime Award Festival 2019 soon to be held!

Japan’s leading international animation film festival, Tokyo Anime Award Festival 2019 (TAAF2019), is taking place in March 2019 in Ikebukuro, Tokyo.

As a co-host of the festival, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government bestows the Governor’s Award on winners of the Grand Prize in the Feature Animation / Short Animation competitions. The Kids Animation Category has also been established to give young children a chance to enjoy creating and watching animation works.

Don’t miss this opportunity to see many wonderful Japanese and overseas animated films shown during the festival period.

Feature and Short Animations

Calls were made for submission of both domestic and international animated works not yet publicly released in Japan. Grand Prize and other awards are bestowed on excellent pieces.
This year’s Feature Animation and Short Animation competition categories attracted 793 entries from 56 countries and regions, including France, Taiwan, Iran and Russia, of which 4 feature and 31 short animations were nominated.

Workshop and Presentation

Children can enjoy anime-making in a two-day program consisting of a workshop and presentation.

Workshop “Anime Aquarium”

Children engage in “fish” animation production in groups, learning how to create “shapes” and “motion” from observation.

Anime of the Year Category

Awards are presented in the Theater Film and TV competition categories, from among animations produced and broadcast or screened between October 15, 2017 and October 13, 2018, in Japan. Specifically, of 100 Best Animations of Everyone’s Choice chosen by a fan vote, anime industry professionals vote on the recipient of the Best Animation Work Prize in the Theatre Film and TV categories, respectively, and on prizes presented to individuals. The Anime Fan Prize is decided by holding a second round of fan voting.

Merit Category

Merit Awards will be bestowed on the following persons in honor of their longtime achievements in the animation production industry in such areas as technology and skills, expression, and cultivation of talent, and for their great contributions to broadly enhancing the animation industry’s status in society through activities, including educational activities and international exchange.
