The renewed Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo will open on Friday, March 29, 2019.

Following three years of major renovations, the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo (MOT), will reopen on Friday, March 29, 2019.
The Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo opened in 1995 in hopes of creating an art museum open to all, through exhibitions of our collection of more than 5,200 pieces, large-scale international exhibits, and programs for spreading contemporary art and educating the next generation.
MOT is taking a new step through these renovations to create a safe and comfortable museum. We will continue to bring various contemporary art from around the world to our visitors.

Outline of renovations

Response to aging facilities and improvement of functions

Various equipment and devices, including the air conditioning, were updated, the museum interiors, including the floors, walls, and ceilings, were completely renovated, and the earthquake resistance treatment was added to the ceilings. The environmental load of the museum was reduced by installing LED lighting, etc.

Improved user services

The renovations include more elevators in the exhibition rooms, more barrier-free facilities such as accessible restrooms, substantial childcare support facilities such as diaper changing tables and baby chairs in the restrooms, a larger children’s corner in the Museum Library, and new doors for accessing the courtyard to improve the visitor flow for traveling inside and outside the museum.

Two concurrent exhibitions will be held to celebrate the grand reopening.
Commemorative events such as a stamp rally and Japanese drum performances are also planned.
