Climate Change, Social Inclusivity, Sustainable Growth and Risk Management Worldwide: Tokyo’s First Urban 20 (U20) Mayors Summit and Urban Resilience Forum Tokyo (URF)

As announced on December 18, 2018, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government will concurrently host the Urban 20 (U20) Mayors Summit and the Urban Resilience Forum Tokyo (URF), as detailed below.

1. 2019 Urban 20 (U20) Tokyo Mayors Summit

(1) Dates

Monday, May 20 – Wednesday, May 22, 2019

(2) Venue

Hilton Tokyo (6-6-2 Nishi-shinjuku, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo)

(3) Purpose of the meeting

While Japan serves as the chair country for the 2019 G20 Summit, Tokyo will be hosting the U20 Mayors Summit, an event that brings together leaders of the world’s major cities. Towards the realization of a sustainable and inclusive world, the participants will discuss issues common to global cities, and craft messages to be delivered to the G20.

(5) Communiqué

An official announcement approved and signed by leaders from U20 participating cities to be delivered to the G20. Press announcement will be held in the morning on Wednesday, May 22.

(7) Streaming online

The summit is planned to live-stream on the website: Tokyo Metropolitan Government Official Video Channel “Tokyo Douga.” Session 6 will be only in English, other sessions will be both in Japanese and English.

(Reference) About the Urban 20 (U20)

  • The U20 is a new city diplomacy initiative developed by the Mayors of Buenos Aires and Paris (Chair of the C40 Group), in collaboration with the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group and United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) on December 12, 2017.
  • Based on the recognition that cities play an important role in creating a sustainable and inclusive world, the U20 aims to reflect experience and expertise of the cities in the G20 discussions.
  • Tokyo joined the U20 on January 24, 2018. While Japan serves as the chair country for the 2019 G20 Summit, Tokyo will be hosting the U20 Mayors Summit.

2. Urban Resilience Forum Tokyo (URF)

Monday, May 20, – Wednesday, May 22, 2019

(2) Venue

Hyatt Regency Tokyo (2-7-2 Nishi-shinjuku, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo)

(3) Purpose of the meeting

In the lead-up to the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020, and in the face of increasingly frequent and intensified urban disasters worldwide, representatives will meet at this forum to share knowledge and policies on disaster preparedness to increase intercity solidarity and common assets. The forum will make an appeal to the world regarding the importance of disaster preparedness in urban areas.
