Events to Mark Giant Panda Xiang Xiang’s 2nd Birthday at Ueno Zoological Gardens
The Ueno Zoological Gardens (Yutaka Fukuda, Zoo Director) will hold various events to mark giant panda Xiang Xiang’s 2nd birthday on June 12, 2019, and report on her steady growth.

1. Xiang Xiang’s Dung: A Record of Her Growth

Under Aesop Bridge in the West Garden
Details:
Using samples of Xiang Xiang’s dung taken by the zoo, this event aims to look back at Xiang Xiang’s growth.
By observing how Xiang Xiang’s dung has changed as she matured, visitors can learn how important bowel movements are as an indicator of growth and health.
2. Special Spot Guide Presentation to Mark Xiang Xiang’s 2nd Birthday

Details:
Members of the Tokyo Zoo Volunteers Docent Group* will give an explanation using actual samples of giant panda dung. The scent of giant panda dung is a bit unusual because the animal’s diet mainly consists of bamboo. Visitors are invited to smell the dung samples and think about what the scent tells us about the panda’s diet and habitat.
*Note: Docents serve as guides at museums, art galleries, and other facilities, and help provide explanation on exhibits. Zoo docents are involved in educational activities, including serving as “Spot Guides” who explain about the animals to zoo visitors.
Presentations on the giant panda are offered every Wednesday.
3. Video to Mark Xiang Xiang’s 2nd Birthday to be Released Online
