Office for Promotion of Citizen Safety
Tokyo has become more and more diversified; as of January 2020 there were approximately 580,000 foreign nationals residing in Tokyo. As a natural consequence, the number of children of foreign residents or with foreign origins has been increasing too.
Under the circumstances, the Office for Promotion of Citizen Safety will start a safety awareness project for children of foreign nationals residing in Tokyo. The project aims to improve the awareness of safety for children so that they will not become involved in crimes or get into other forms of trouble. The project includes the preparation of a guidebook containing basic knowledge of safety for children in multiple languages and simple Japanese, and the provision of seminars by specialists to increase awareness of safety.
*Simple Japanese: Easy-to-understand Japanese for foreign nationals, rephrasing difficult words with simple expressions
We will prepare and distribute a guidebook containing basic knowledge concerning the prevention of crimes and delinquency, such as how to protect yourself in towns, and prohibitions against shoplifting.
The hero of the story and a wizard learn about safety together in the book.
We will dispatch specialists to international schools, etc. to provide junior and senior high school students with safety awareness seminars so that they can learn crime prevention and awareness of the norms of society. The seminars will feature group tasks to encourage the children to think and discuss amongst themselves, in addition to lectures.
As the nationalities of foreigners residing in Tokyo have become diversified, the Office for Promotion of Citizen Safety introduces various projects in simple Japanese, in addition to English, on its website. Also, using the MIMAMORYINU Facebook(External link), we will provide some useful information on safety in simple Japanese.
