Implementation of Initiatives to Prevent Ivory Products from Being Taken Overseas

In order to prevent ivory and ivory products, of which international trade is regulated by the Washington Convention, from being illegally taken out of Japan, we will implement the following measures in cooperation with the national government based on the opinions of the Advisory Council on Regulation of Ivory Trade for the Tokyo 2020 Games.

1. Request to ivory traders in Tokyo

The following is requested of Special International Species Operators with facilities in Tokyo that are registered based on the Act on Conservation of Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.

Request

  • Conduct sales after confirming the intent of potential purchasers to not illegally take the product overseas
  • Refrain from selling products when there is a risk that they may be taken overseas, such as when such intent cannot be confirmed
  • Spread awareness at sales counters and other locations using posters created by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government that taking ivory products overseas is generally prohibited

2. Dissemination of Information in Japan and Overseas

In order to spread awareness that illegally taking ivory products overseas is prohibited, we will create multilingual posters and other materials with the cooperation of the national government, and release information inside and outside Japan.
