The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Torch Relay in Tokyo will start on Friday 9 July. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all of the sections of the torch relay planned to be held on public roads from Friday 9 to Friday 23 July have been canceled, with the exception of isolated island areas.
However, as a replacement for the public road sections of the torch relay, a flame lighting ceremony will be held without spectators. This ceremony will be streamed live on the website of the Bureau of Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020 Preparation, so please enjoy it in the comfort of your home.
In addition, prior to the lighting ceremony on each day, special programming such as video footage highlighting the distinctive cultural features of the municipalities planned for each ceremony section will be broadcast starting approximately 30 minutes prior to the first lighting ceremony section (however, this programming will air after the fourth lighting ceremony section on Friday 9 July).
An unveiling ceremony will be held for the Olympic flame when it arrives in Tokyo after it finishes traveling around the country.

The Olympic flame will be passed for each section, then placed in a lantern at the end of each section. Next, the torch of the first torchbearers for the next section is lighted from the lantern. The final torchbearers for the day places the Olympic flame on a special celebration cauldron, ending the lighting ceremony for the day.
