Results of Surveys on Tokyo Residents’ Involvement in Sports Activities (Quick Report)

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) is pleased to announce the release of a quick report of the results of the Survey on Tokyo Residents’ Involvement in Sports Activities (conducted in October 2023) and the Survey on the Awareness of Individuals with Impairments about Sports Activities (conducted in September 2023). These surveys were conducted to gain a better understanding of the sports participation rate* among Tokyo residents, one of the TMG Policy Targets for 2030 set in Future Tokyo: Tokyo’s Long-Term Strategy to effectively develop measures for the promotion of sports.

*Sports participation rate: Rate of residents (aged 18 or older) who have been involved in sports and exercise activities once or more per week. This survey targeted the one-year period to the date of the survey.

1.Major Points in the Survey Results (Quick Report)

Sports participation rate among Tokyo residents: 66.3%(Increased by 0.4pt from the previous survey)

Reasons for participating in sports and exercise

  • Health maintenance, Physical strength development 77.4%
  • Lack of exercise 62.6%

Sports and exercise in the past one year

  • Walking, Taking a walk 79.7%
  • Calisthenics 50.5%

Sports participation rate of individuals with impairments aged 18 or older: 46.3%(Increased by 11.1pt from the previous survey)

*Sports participation rate of individuals aged 7 to 17 was 55.4%.(Increased by 15.4pt from the previous survey)

Reasons for participating in sports and exercises

  • Health maintenance, Physical strength development 72.8%
  • Lack of exercise 53.9%

Places where sport or exercise was done

  • On streets and promenades 57.0%
  • At home 41.1%

Rate of Tokyo residents interested in Para sports activities*: 44.3% (Increased by 1.1pt from the previous survey)

*Rate of Tokyo residents who chose “Very interested” and “Relatively interested”.

Reasons for interest in Para sports activities

  • Because I watched Para sports or the Paralympic sports on TV, radio, online, etc. 69.0%
  • Because I watched media reports or articles on Para sports activities 35.7%
  • Because I was fascinated by the athletes themselves 26.7%

3.Other

TMG is analyzing the results of both surveys with other survey items and will report around the late March 2024.
