A ceremony was held on October 26 to present certificates of appreciation to those who contributed to the success of the Tokyo 2020 Games in recognition of their achievements and to express our gratitude.
The Tokyo Residents Sports Award was presented to medalists who won medals at the Games and live, work or have some relation to Tokyo, and the Tokyo Medal of Honor was presented to gold medalists.
Attendees included Abe Hifumi, the Olympic judo champion in the men's 66-kg weight class, and Kimura Keiichi, the Paralympic swimming champion in the men's 100-m butterfly visually impaired class.
After the ceremonies, there was an exchange meeting between the six medalists and 128 students from Nishishinjuku Elementary School in Shinjuku, where the medalists answered questions from students.
Arai Chizuru, the Olympic gold medalist in the women's judo 70 kg division, was asked by a student who plays baseball, “How can I become a strong player and win?” and responded, “Even though winning is the desired outcome, I want you to go into games with the mindset of giving it everything you have got.”
